Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS)

Instrumental/Vocal Music Pedagogy

The Diploma of Advanced Studies in Instrumental/Vocal Music Pedagogy with a minimum duration of two years offered on a part-time basis. It is designed for those seeking a solid and in-depth education in instrumental and vocal pedagogy. The course is also open to professionals already active in the field who wish to further develop their teaching profile.

Year 1

  • Educational Sciences 1 (6 ECTS)

Year 2

  • Educational Sciences 2 (6 ECTS)

  • Educational pedagogical discussion, professional knowledge (1 ECTS)
  • Ensemble/Choir Conducting (1 ECTS)
  • Elements of transcription and composition in education (2 ECTS)
  • Seminars/Elective Activities (2 ECTS)**
  • Final Pedagogical Exam (1 ECTS)

Upon completion of all the required credits, as outlined in the study plan, individual CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) are issued upon request for the first and second year:

  • CAS Fundamental Studies in Instrumental/Vocal Music Pedagogy
  • CAS Advanced Studies in Instrumental/Vocal Music Pedagogy

 

DAS Final Project

The DAS Final Project is the concluding module of the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) in Instrumental/Vocal Music Pedagogy.

-> Final project credits: 10 ECTS

 

It can be completed during the second year or afterwards, in agreement with the Head of Continuing Education.
The DAS project consists of a personal, typically individual, assignment that demonstrates the student's ability to apply the theoretical and practical skills acquired during the course to address a significant issue within the field, while also aiming to propose original solutions whenever possible.

Admission requirements

Admission to the Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy, Major in Instrumental/Vocal Music Pedagogy, is conditional on:

  • successful completion of a Master of Arts in Music or equivalent musical education
  • passing an admission exam;
  • the availability of places.

 

Entrance exams

Admission exams will take place in Lugano from June 16 to 20, 2025, by invitation.

The exam consists of:

  • Performance: Two pieces of contrasting styles, chosen by the candidate, with a maximum total duration of 10 minutes.
  • Teaching demonstration: A 20-minute individual lesson given to a student.
  • Interview: A short oral interview with the commission.

 

Language

For admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy, non-native speakers of Italian are required to demonstrate a sufficient level of the Italian language during the interview in the entrance examination. A sufficient level of Italian is equivalent to level B2 according to the CEFR, or CELI 3.

 

Costs

Application fee

The application fee of CHF 100.- (plus transaction costs), can be paid in any of the following ways:

  • online payment with a credit card or PayPal account, through the applications portal. In this case it is not necessary to upload a transaction receipt in the portal;
  • payment by bank transfer. In this case, a copy of the transaction receipt must be uploaded to the applications portal. All information necessary for the transfer are available in the Fees and Charges page on our website, under the "Payment details section.

 

DAS in Instrumental/Vocal Music Pedagogy:

Total cost for a course of study completed within two academic years* amounts to CHF 10,750, divided as follows:

  • Matriculation fee (One-off) CHF 250
  • Administrative fee (per semester) CHF 250
  • DAS tuition fee (per semester) Year 1 CHF 1’500
  • DAS tuition fee (per semester) Year 2 CHF 2’250
  • Final Pedagogical Exam fee CHF 250
  • Final Project fee CHF 1’500
  • Final exam fee CHF 250

 

Admission and enrolment procedures

1) Admission procedure - by May 31

a) Fill in the online application form. The online application form can be completed by following this LINK
b) Upload the required documents to the applications portal:

1) Copy of ID or passport;
2) Copy of study qualifications;
3) Curriculum vitae;
4) Motivation letter;

Late applications can only be exceptionally accepted if places are available. Incomplete dossiers will not be taken into consideration. The University of Music may ask for further documents (e.g. translations or certificates), should it find any of the documents in the application dossier to be lacking in clarity or comprehensibility, with particular attention to the diplomas.

Access to the applications portal is possible in one of the following ways:

  • As soon as you fill in the application form (automatic redirect)
  • By clicking the link received by email with the pre-registration data
  • By heading to applications.conservatorio.ch and login in with the access credentials provided via email

 

2) Enrolment

Candidates who successfully pass the admission exam, will receive a letter of admission and a registration confirmation form by email. This form must be signed and returned both by email (to servizi.accademici@conservatorio.chand by post to the Segreteria didattica as instructed in the letter of admission.

Once the letter of confirmation of enrolment has been signed, the candidate is officially enrolled at the University of Music of the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana for the first semester. Withdrawal from studies will only be possible from the second semester on. The earliest possible date to withdraw one’s enrollment is October 31. Even in the case the student doesn’t attend any lesson at the Conservatorio, all fees for the first semester will have to be paid.

Una volta iscritto, l'eventuale primo termine utile per disdire la propria iscrizione è il 31 ottobre, con decorrenza a partire dal il secondo semestre; anche nel caso in cui non venisse frequentata alcuna lezione, verranno dunque fatturati tutti i costi relativi al primo semestre.  

For the following autumn semester (1st semester of the second year), the withdrawal deadline is March 1.

 

Enroled students are requested to come to the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana at the beginning of September for:

  1. Completing the Matriculation, by bringing to the Segreteria didattica the original of their access diploma (or their ex-matriculation certificate, if they have studied at another Swiss University);
  2. Submitting a study plan proposal to the Head of Continuing Education. Students will receive their approved study plan by the end of September;
  3. Participating in other scheduled activities.

 

Qualification

At the end of their studies, participants will obtain the title on condition that they:

  • have acquired all required ECTS credits;
  • have successfully taken the final project;
  • have paid the fees. 

The University of Music of the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana is a state-recognised university school and is affiliated to the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI). The titles that it awards are recognised by the Federal Government according to the law (HEdA - September 30, 2011).

This title is not a professional qualification and does not qualify holders to teach in public schools in Switzerland. 

Regulations

The course is subject to the current Regulations of Studies of the University of Music. The University of Music reserves the right not to activate the course if the necessary conditions are not met.

Extension of the duration of studies: The possibility to extend the course of study is granted only with prior authorization from the Head of Continuing Education. In such cases, the corresponding fees and charges will be regularly invoiced to the student.

Repetition of the final exam: The final examination consists of two steps: a final pedagogical exam (see second-year study plan) and the DAS final project. In the event of absence or failure in one or both components, the student may retake them in a subsequent session. For each deferred semester, only the corresponding administrative fee will be charged to the student.

Suspension of studies: in exceptional cases, and with the authorization of the Head of Continuing Education, students may request to temporarily suspend their studies. For each semester of suspension, the University of Music will invoice students only the administrative fee. The suspension request must be sent to the Segreteria didattica, according to the deadlines listed below.

Withdrawal of studies: if students decide to withdraw from their studies, their request must be sent the Segreteria didattica, according to the deadlines listed below.

Deadlines: suspension or withdrawal deadlines are:

  • 31 October for the second semester (February-August)
  • 1 March for the first semester of the following academic year (September – January) 

If the deadline is not respected, students will be invoiced for all fees of the following semester.
