900presente

Founded in 1999 by Giorgio Bernasconi and rooted in Ticino’s tradition of openness to musical avant-gardes, 900presente emerged as a co-production between the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana and RSI Rete Due. From 2011 to 2023, Arturo Tamayo served as the artistic advisor for the concert season.

Supported by growing public interest and a consistently high artistic standard, 900presente has, over the years, become the leading reference point for modern and contemporary music in Ticino. Its reputation has expanded nationally and internationally, with performances in cities such as Vienna, Florence, Venice, Milan, and Cuenca.

The resident group, Ensemble900, is composed of students from the Bachelor, Master, and Continuing Education programs at the University School of Music. Internationally renowned soloists have frequently collaborated with the ensemble. In recent years, however, solo parts have increasingly been entrusted to the Conservatorio's own students, particularly those enrolled in the Master of Arts in Specialized Music Performance with a soloist focus.

Since its inception, 900presente has produced more than 150 concert, theatrical, and multimedia events, many of which have been recorded by the Swiss Italian-language public broadcaster RSI. The project has welcomed distinguished musicians and composers such as Harrison Birtwistle, Thüring Bräm, Sylvano Bussotti, Azio Corghi, Stefano Gervasoni, Klaus Huber, Michael Jarrell, Betsy Jolas, Rudolf Kelterborn, Helmut Lachenmann, Johannes Schöllhorn, Salvatore Sciarrino, and Heiner Goebbels.

The initiative has developed significant collaborations with prestigious cultural institutions, most notably the Audio Fiction Department of RSI. Together, they produced several radio dramas, including Il mio cuore è nel sud by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi with music by Bruno Maderna, Il testimone indesiderato by Gino Negri, Words and Music by Samuel Beckett with music by Morton Feldman, and Tête d’Or by Paul Claudel with music by Arthur Honegger in an arrangement by Pierre Boulez. The LAC (Lugano Arte e Cultura) has also been a key partner, co-producing the Italian premiere of Giorgio Battistelli’s music theatre work I Cenci.

In collaboration with the Accademia Teatro Dimitri and the Visual Communication program of SUPSI, 900presente has staged several large-scale multimedia productions, including Der Gelbe Klang by Vassily Kandinsky with original music by Carlo Ciceri; Gesti vocali, featuring compositions by Luciano Berio and Dieter Schnebel; Dadamusica with works by George Antheil and Erik Satie; The Threepenny Opera by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht; Satyricon by Bruno Maderna; Kraanerg by Iannis Xenakis; The Rape of Lucretia by Benjamin Britten; Le Dit des Jeux du Monde by Arthur Honegger; Le Désir attrapé par la queue by Pablo Picasso with music by Igor Stravinsky; and Third Hand Socrates, inspired by the work of Erik Satie and John Cage.
