Admission requirements

Admission to the Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy, Major in Elementary Music Education, is conditional on:

  • successful completion of a Bachelor of Arts in Music or equivalent musical education, or completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Music and Movement or equivalent title;
  • passing an admission exam;
  • the availability of places.

Language

For admission to the Bachelor of Arts in Music and the Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy, non-native speakers of Italian are required to demonstrate a sufficient level of the Italian language during the interview in the entrance examination. A sufficient level of Italian is equivalent to level B2 according to the CEFR, or CELI 3. Those who do not have this language level at the start of their studies must nevertheless demonstrate a sufficient level of Italian and reach level B2 or CELI 3 by the end of their first year of study.

Once you have completed the application form, you will need to upload the required documents to the applications portal. Precise instructions on how to access the applications portal are sent via email.

Required documents

The following documents must be uploaded to the applications portal:

  • confirmation of payment: those who decide to pay for the application fee via bank transfer, should upload a copy of the transfer confirmation.
  • copy of ID or passport, which must be readable with both personal information and expiration date of the document clearly visible.
  • copy of the Access diploma to university studies: for the Bachelor of Arts, the access diploma is the High School diploma (or equivalent). Candidates who are sitting their diploma exams (high school) in the current academic year should attach a self-certification that the qualification will be obtained by the start of the academic year being applied for.
  • curriculum vitae et studiorum: in list format, not in prose.
  • motivation letter: in which candidates state the motives that inspired them to choose the study programme to which they are applying.

An application is considered complete if it includes all the required information.

Application fee

The application fee of CHF 100.- (plus transaction costs), can be paid in any of the following ways:

  • online payment with a credit card or PayPal account, through the applications portal. In this case it is not necessary to upload a transaction receipt in the portal;
  • payment by bank transfer. In this case, a copy of the transaction receipt must be uploaded to the applications portal. All information necessary for the transfer are available in the Fees and Charges page on our website, under the "Payment details section.

 

Admissions procedure

The procedure is structured in two phases:

  • a practical test;
  • a pedagogical test with a group of children;

Calendar for the live examinations

Candidates will receive timely invitations by email to the various examinations, which will take place in April.

 

The University School of Music reserves the right to make changes to the schedule of entrance examinations at any time.

Frequently asked questions

  • The practical test consists of four stages: an instrumental test, a singing test, a complementary instrument test and an interview. Passing the four stages gives access to the practice with the children.

    Instrumental/vocal test

    Performance of two pieces in a different style of the candidate's choice with a maximum duration of ten minutes.

    Singing test

    • singing and playing three children's songs from memory
    • prima vista

    Practical test with a complementary instrument

    • free accompaniment of a short folk melody (piano and/or harmonic instrument)
    • performance of two short pieces of the candidate's choice on the complementary instrument (recorder or melodic instrument)

    Interview

    The interview is intended to test readiness for group and classroom teaching.

  • Candidates will have 15 minutes for an activity with a group of 6-8 children of primary school age. The activity should include: a presentation greeting of your choice, a musical game and a final greeting.

    The main activity (musical game, singing, etc.) will be chosen by the candidate taking cues from the annexes, or can be decided independently of the annexes. Possible activities:

    • accompany a piece of music with Orff instruments;
    • singing a cappella or accompanied by the candidate with an instrument of choice or/and by the children with instruments. Various Orff instruments such as woodwinds, drums, triangles etc. will be provided in the classroom. There are also sound plates and some xylophones. If candidates intend to use recorded pieces, they are asked to bring playback media such as speakers;
    • Dalcroze rhythmic activities: e.g. working with the body on metrics, dynamics or phrasing.

  • Different rules apply according to the nationality of the candidates:

  • Candidates are invited to pay attention to the customs and import regulations established by the Federal Customs Administration, with regard to traveling with musical instruments. Information on this regard may be found on the website of the Federal Customs Administration. When leaving Switzerland, candidates must observe import regulations in their destination country.
